There are never dull moments when success stories are told. Especially the grass to grace or overcoming adversity tales. The biblical story of Ruth is one of such. Like most success stories of women, her husband, Boaz stands out with interesting lessons that other men can learn from him, to apply in helping their women achieve success.
Boaz was perceptive and knowledgeable. He was attuned to the details that others might overlook. He absorbed information keenly, never missing a crucial piece of insight. He was deeply involved in his business and personal affairs. He was not an absent entrepreneur or a disinterested, aloof family relative. He was abreast with culture and traditions, and the politics surrounding them.
Boaz was a principled man who displayed both firmness and vulnerability at different moments. He was resolute in his instructions to his workers, ensuring Ruth had provisions daily. Yet, when Ruth made advances toward him, his response was a display of affection, understanding and wisdom. He did not exploit the situation, but instead responded with integrity; by resisting wrongdoing and embracing the path that led to their marriage with sincerity and commitment.
Boaz knew how to make people respect his woman. His praise for Ruth at the gates in the presence of the witnesses – like the husband of the woman in Proverbs 31 – was the beginning of her prominence as a Matriarch. In the entire scripture, Ruth stands out as the woman that a congregation of people in a city, including elders, prayed for during her marriage. Their prayers for Ruth were exceptional. They prayed on her ancestral blessings of family success, fortune, fame and future expansion for her children.
Why would she not become a Matriarch, when as a foreigner, every part of the city was represented to witness, honor and pray for her, because Boaz was wise enough to navigate societal structures to get that done for his wife.
Like Boaz, men can be the architects behind the successes of their women, and it is beautiful to watch as men in their wisdom stand aside to give their women the support and spotlight to shine. Nothing beats the pleasure of having both spouses succeed exceptionally in their rights.
