This story is very instructive, if we want to learn how to start over more intelligently, especially after a setback or a fall. Ruth was a young Moabitess on foreign soil with only the credentials of being a widow and daughter in-law. All she had was a sense of responsibility towards a poor mother in-law, who life had dealt a hard hand.
Her story is one of resilience and consistency. Without qualifications, she sought for sustenance by giving herself the job of picking up leftovers. She worked after daily hirelings had finished their shifts. She was less than the lowest cadre in the farm. Her take home was less than minimum wage.
Ruth focused on daily effort. Each day, she showed up; coming out to do the best she could for their sustenance. She knew that consistent actions can compound over time, and that steady efforts can lead to long-term success. In her case, her faithful diligence was seen by others and this brought recommendations that led to speedy progress for her.
She kept faith in her mother-in-law’s wisdom. The way ahead can often be through the eyes of someone with better wisdom. Whether it is through divine or human guidance, faith is trusting that the result you seek will come when you take a specific action. One of life’s rarest gifts is to have access to wisdom you need for any situation.
Ruth had the uncanny ability to focus in the present moment. She didn’t let her past ordeals affect her present actions. She immersed herself in taking every step wholeheartedly. She didn’t exhibit traces of self pity, low self esteem or behaviors indicative of traumas with roots in bad experiences. She wanted to learn how best to live the new life she had come into, and she learnt it and lived it well.
Ruth started afresh as a widow by picking harvest leftovers to establish a legacy; as a Matriarch in the most important lineage in Israel.
