Self-awareness is the cornerstone of personal growth and effectiveness. Years ago, we had a driver who had years of experience, but not with an SUV. In one month, he caused a lot of repairs on the vehicle because he thought “he could handle it”. Knowing yourself involves understanding your own emotions, motivations, strengths, weaknesses, and how your behavior impacts others.
Cultivating self-awareness helps you align what you believe with your actions, and also helps you make better decisions and improve your relationships.
Regularly reflect on yourself.
Set aside time regularly to reflect on your thoughts, emotions, and experiences. Times of reflection can help bring clarity to what drives you and how you respond to situations. You can learn lessons from such times and fine tune your thoughts, approach and feelings.
Clarify your values. Self-awareness grows when you understand what you stand for and why. Define your values and assess whether your actions align with them. Demonstrate your commitment to your values in your daily actions.
Learn to seek feedback. Often, we are unaware of how others perceive us. One of the ways I have learned to seek feedback is to ask the simple question, “How do you see it?” Constructive feedback from trusted individuals can give you valuable insight into areas where you may be blind to your own behaviors or performance.
Understand yourself. Make the effort to identify emotional triggers and patterns of behavior that you display in certain situations. This can help you manage your responses more effectively.
Mind what you tell yourself. Pay attention to your self-talk. Your thoughts greatly influence your self-perception and how you present yourself to the world.
Most people lack one thing to live their dream. Regrettably, they lack what they already have. It is courage. It only comes alive in you when you talk your self into it.
