Recently, Facebook and Google reminded me of posts I made and pictures I took, 10 years ago, and I was grinning while looking at them. They were lovely memories. What I learnt in that moment, was that our future starts now. We create tomorrow by our actions now.
Our tomorrow will either thank us, or jeer at us, for the actions and decisions we take today. Doing something today that your future self will thank you for is about making decisions and taking actions that have long-term benefits.
Become intentional in personal growth. Investing time in learning new skills or enhancing existing ones is a strategy for personal development. This could be through reading, taking courses, or practicing a new hobby.
Be mindful of your health. Don’t end up with regret at your eating or living habits. Make choices that promote long-term well-being, such as exercising regularly, eating nutritious food, or scheduling regular check-ups.
Plan your finances. Setting aside savings, investing wisely, or planning for retirement are some of the best everyday decisions you can make for the future. These actions can provide financial security and freedom in the future.
Build great relationships. Nurture important relationships and build a supportive network. A close ally who left years ago in a bad way, came recently looking for help, and I asked a simple question, “If I stick out my neck to loan this money, and a time comes when the money is needed back and I start calling you for it, will you not ignore my calls and block me like you have done before?” His reply was, “I had a point.”
I told him that his problem was the relationships he didn’t have at the moment, and not necessarily his lack of finances to meet his need. I went ahead to tell him about people we both know, that he has thrown away their relationships. I asked him to call them to make it up, but he didn’t do it. Unknown to him, I had discussed his matter with one of those people, who was ready to give him the money, if he had called to make up the relationship.
Build a career. Focus on projects or goals that align with your long-term career aspirations. This might involve taking on challenging tasks or seeking mentorship.
Don’t get to tomorrow only to regret your actions and decisions today. Live today with the intention of building a great tomorrow.
