It is easy to role play as biblical characters, than to live out the spiritual virtues of scripture. It easy to see Abraham through scriptural anecdotes as a blessed man, who through patience obtained the promise. It is easy to explain how Jacob got Isaac’s blessing and ran away from Esau, his brother, only to come back blessed with a large family. So many things are easy, until they happen in real life situations.
Society makes situations harder with negative labels. The supplanter Jacob is our father in faith, but a 50 years old man without a wife or steady job, has no destiny in our eyes. We treat a 35 years old woman without a husband as one who has wasted her usefulness, but we adore Rahab and Ruth as Matriarchs. We label a couple without children after years of marriage, but we vilify Abraham and Sarah as parents of many nations. Travails are more easily accepted by society when it is read in scriptures, than when it is experienced in real life.
The thief on the right hand of Jesus, who went to paradise in scripture, is more easier to accept by today’s society, than a teen who engages in premarital sex that results in unwanted pregnancy. It is easy for us to hold on to the faults, kick the fallen and exaggerate the failures. Many people don’t consider how to make things better.
We forget that people can become better. A young man who was caught in adultery years ago, is today a thriving pastor, excellent in his ways, as an older man. A doctor in his forties who many termed failure and visionless, is today successful in many ways, in his sixties. A young girl whose mistake made her birth a son, and later married wrongly, is today joyfully living as a pastor’s wife, in a happy second marriage.
It is not over for anyone, until they give up on themselves. God has chances human society don’t know of. The best human nature we can display is to lend a hand in wisdom and support to anyone in need. While we don’t know how things will turn out, and we are not hoping for a reward, we can definitely do our part to ensure that it turns out well and show that we wish others well in life.
