TRY AGAIN

July 22, 2025

My daughter was rehearsing for her school’s end of year party and was having difficulty pronouncing a word in her script. She would get close to pronouncing right and the next time veer off completely. It got a point we could see she was already thinking it was beyond her to get it right, so we told her to try saying the word alone without the sentence in the script. She pronounced the word rightly, was able to spell it and kept saying it right. Often what we need to succeed when we face obstacles is to try again with a better method.

Welcome to Episode One Hundred and Ninety-Nine. Our focus is on avenues we can explore to help us pick ourselves up from a setback or bad situation. The title is TRY AGAIN. Let’s begin.

To “Try Again” isn’t just a phrase to make you throw more punches without impact or conjure additional effort without progress; it is the resilient stance of human potential that can be mixed with appropriate information to secure needed solutions. With the right information, trying again is the defiance against failure and the refusal to let a stumble become a tombstone. When success seems impossibly distant, trying again offers the opportunity to cultivate the strength to pick yourself up, armed by new knowledge and make another attempt that forges triumph.

Setbacks are not dead ends. Every attempt that doesn’t yield the desired result teaches you something invaluable. Be sensitive to know what didn’t work and why it didn’t work? What adjustment could make a difference? The way to turn a “no” to “yes” is to know the adjustment you can make. This is where you need new knowledge.

Whenever success seems distant, focus on the next foothold. Success is not always a giant leap; it can be a series of tiny steps. Sometimes, progress comes at snail-speed. Acknowledge your effort and your courage in showing up. Small wins build momentum and prove you are moving forward.

Trying again doesn’t mean blindly repeating the same actions and expecting different results. It means to analyze what went wrong with honesty. To ascertain what new approach you could take. What resource you overlooked. What skill could you develop? Flexibility and adaptability are the hallmarks of resilient people. While the destination of success remains the same; sometimes, you need to redraw the route to follow.

Yue Fei, the Chinese General’s story comes to mind when he learnt resilience from a beetle who after many attempts was able to roll a boulder of dung up a slope. This scene inspired the General to go back to his drawing board and go on to win the war. The most profound victories are often forged in the unseen moments. Every time you choose to TRY AGAIN, you are doing something extraordinary. You are proving to yourself that you are stronger than the obstacle. You are demonstrating a courage that transcends momentary failure. You are actively shaping your story into one of perseverance, learning, and ultimate triumph.
