FIRST THINGS FIRST

June 13, 2025

The world screams for attention. It demands immediate results, visible progress, and constant validation. Likes, shares, follower counts, quick wins, fast foods, fast cars — these metrics are what people often celebrate. Yet, deep within you, there’s a quiet whisper, a profound pull towards a greater purpose– in your life, your business, your ministry. This purpose doesn’t bloom overnight on the noisy stage; it germinates in the fertile soil of silence, cultivated by the disciplined focus of putting first things first.

You are in a special season of your life. This is a period of unseen labor, of preparation away from the spotlight. Routine is your best friend. Boring builds your strength. It is a continuous cycle of the same rituals and a regular struggle to meet needs. This isn’t stagnation. This is strategic construction. This is the demand of laying the unshakeable foundation for the magnificent structure of the future.

Noise scatters energy and focus. Silence allows you to hone the essential skills. What are the core skills, the values, the deep knowledge you must possess for your purpose to flourish? Silence is where you master them, undisturbed. The dark silence is where the negative gets its authentic refinements and becomes the true picture.

Away from applause or criticism, you refine your craft, your message, your character. This is where you wrestle with doubts, strengthen convictions, and ensure your motives remain pure. Building in silence tests your commitment to the work itself, not just the potential reward.

Just as a Chinese bamboo sends roots deep before bursting skyward, the silent season allows for profound internal growth. You build resilience, patience, and an unwavering trust in the process and the greater plan. This root system will anchor you through inevitable future storms.

Not every idea is ready for the harsh light of day. Not every skill is polished enough at first. This silence protects the fragile and tender sapling of your purpose from being trampled by opinions, stolen by opportunists, or withered by premature expectations.

In the quiet, often you get the clarity you seek. You discern the first things – the foundational actions, the critical investments of time, energy, learning that must precede the grand launch, the public ministry, the business expansion.

Jesus experienced the silence for twenty-one years, Moses was chased into the silence for fourty years, Jonah was swallowed into the silence for three days and Joseph suffered the silence as a housekeeper and prisoner. All making steady input in silence before public ministry. In modern times, many entrepreneurs and leaders have experienced silent days too. Colonel Sanders began cooking at about age 40, but the success of Kentucky Fried Chicken came when he was about 65.

First things first is a pathway and not just a principle. It is the preparation before performance, the building of character before displaying charisma, investing in private prayer before standing tall to proclaim grace, and embracing the process that makes the product.

This is such a powerfully reflective and deeply rooted piece. It reminds me that silence isn’t emptiness—it’s preparation. The message speaks volumes about the sacredness of obscurity, the hidden seasons when true growth happens away from applause and validation. “Boring builds your strength” is a quiet truth many overlook, yet it’s in that daily discipline that destiny is shaped. A timely encouragement for anyone navigating their own season of silent construction.
