DELAYED DISAPPOINTMENT

July 8, 2025

Welcome to Episode One Hundred and Eighty-Seven.

We bring you everyday wisdom to help improve your life in many ways.

Our discussion is focused on taking steps to walk out of illusory hopes and dreams that only end up in disappointment. The title is, DELAYED DISAPPOINTMENT.

It is always an exhilarating feeling to experience when a dream or idea takes shape in our mind. Like fantasies, we can make the mistake of feeding our ideas with hopes of effortless success and overnight formation. This is taken too far when we begin to pour ourselves into it because we believe that by simply wanting it intensely or visualising it clearly enough, will make it manifest.

The problem here isn’t the dream itself, but the foundation we have decided to build them upon. This is the seductive appeal of the power of false hopes, whose end is only in delayed disappointment. The worst effect of delayed disappointment is not just the sadness it brings, it’s the time and emotional energy invested in the illusion. It breeds cynicism, erodes self-trust, and can paralyze us from trying again. This is what stops people from chasing their dreams after such mistake.

Instead of just wishing for the outcome, get practical. Hold yourself to answering hard questions. What is the very next step towards your dream? What skill do you need to learn? Who do you need to talk to? What small action can you take today? What does success truly require in your chosen field? What are the common pitfalls? Talk to people who have achieved similar goals. Knowledge replaces blind optimism with informed confidence.

Fixating solely on the end result sets you up for disappointment. Also fall in love with the process and journey to the result. Acknowledge every milestone attained, chapter finished and skill gained. They are tangible proof of progress, building momentum and resilience. You can’t control everything. You can control your effort, your learning, your consistency, and your attitude. Channel your energy there.

False hope flourishes in the absence of honest assessment. Ask yourself: “Based on my actions, not my wishes, over the last month or quarter, am I genuinely moving closer to my goal?” Be honest. Don’t hide your work. Find trusted mentors or peers who will give you truthful, actionable feedback, not just empty praise. Use it to adapt and improve. When something goes wrong and it will, resist the slide into despair or denial. Analyze it dispassionately. What happened? Why? What can I learn? How do I adjust my approach? A setback is a course correction, not proof of failure.

Stop banking on mirages. Start building on bedrock. Plant your feet firmly in the reality of the present moment, arm yourself with a pragmatic plan, and take that next deliberate step. The journey towards your dream will still have challenges and moments of doubt, but it won’t be paved with the crushing weight of avoidable, delayed disappointment. Your dream deserves a foundation strong enough to support it, built not on hope alone, but on the unwavering commitment to showing up, doing the work, and growing every single day. That’s how dreams transform from fragile fantasies into tangible realities.
