Two things in life seem bizarre to me. An already bad situation would often call out for a worst thing to happen and setbacks never come at the right time. For some people, when things seem to finally start looking better, then a setback strikes. For others, when you are already stretched thin, then something happens that demands more from you. Life unfolds with detours, delays and setbacks. Frustrated by such situations, we ask the desperate question, “Why Now?”
Our focus in this discourse is to accurately decipher the divine role of each challenge and setback we encounter in the grand scheme of our life’s purpose. The title is, “WHY NOW?” This is Episode One Hundred and Ninety-Seven.
The truth is, setbacks and problems are rarely random. They come as nature’s cruel assistance. You can see our previous posts where we discussed why problems come and how to find solutions while we are still in problems. Setbacks come with a timing that is often precise and painful, helping to orchestrate your journey towards realizing your full potential.

Asking “why now” may not give us the best answers, especially, when we are supposed to focus on finding solutions to our situation. But the answers we seek and the attitude we need lie in understanding the timing of your life in the ultimate scheme of your becoming the very best version of yourself.
Every setback and challenge comes at the required time, even if you don’t realize it yet. The timing ensures you have the foundational strength, however nascent, to engage with the lesson. The problem arrives because you are finally ready to learn it.
The ill-timed problem might be redirecting you, forcing you to develop crucial skills, humility, or perspective before you step onto a bigger stage. What if the temporary setback is trying to prevent you from premature success, ensuring that when true success arrives, you are grounded, resilient, and truly capable of sustaining it.
A setback can be the catalyst for necessary change. It acts as divine blunt instrument for shattering complacency. It forces a re-evaluation precisely when stagnation sets in. You lose your job, your health gives a scare, your relationship ruptures – these mostly arrive at the moment when staying the same is becoming more dangerous than the pain of change. They propel us onto the path we need, not necessarily the one we want.
Challenges can come to help us synchronize and align our internal growth to our outward environment. The timing of problems often mirrors an internal or unresolved tension. That conflict with a colleague erupts because you’ve finally reached a point where you can no longer tolerate misalignment with your values. You can experience some tension outwardly with people around because you subconsciously yearn to break free from old patterns. A setback can be an external manifestation demanding resolution of an internal conflict, pushing you towards greater congruence.
The specific timing and sequence of your challenges are what forge your unique perspective, strengths, and wisdom. The hardship you face interacts uniquely with your past experiences and current aspirations. Like a thread, it adds to your life’s tapestry, weaving and contributing to the singular, authentic person you are becoming. Every specific struggle becomes a crucial brushstroke in the masterpiece of your life.
The next time a problem arises to spoil your plans, and the words “Why now?” rises in your throat, try to look for the strength the situation is building in you, the outdated belief or pattern it is challenging you to let go, the unique authenticity it is forcing you to embrace and what new path or perspective is opening up that you couldn’t see before.
The “Why Now” question can lead you to discover that setbacks and problems are not always a necessary punishment; they can also be an invitation – an invitation to dig deeper, shed old skins, and step more fully into your power and purpose. I pray you will find the answers that every struggle in your life brings.
