Allow me to begin with this cliche, ‘Your fall does not define you. Your reaction to it does.’ It does you no good to stay down with the pain and misery associated with falls and failures. Let your heart scan the horizon for the next right thing. The change you seek begins inside you with the choice you make.
Choosing solution-driven action is rarely the easy path. When you commit to doing the next right thing – consistently, courageously, even when it’s hard, transformation occurs.
Honestly assess the situation without flinching. What truly caused the fall? What resources do you actually have left? Brutal honesty is the foundation of real solutions.
Trying to rebuild your entire life overnight isn’t the best decision. Make your focus small on one thing. What is the single, most impactful next right thing I can do, right now, with what I have? Is it making one difficult phone call? Researching one skill I need? Drafting one page of the project I abandoned? Find that one thing and do that.
The “right” next step often feels uncomfortable. It might involve swallowing pride, asking for help, starting over humbly, or tackling a task you’ve avoided. Often, discomfort accompanies growth.
Stay rooted in reality. Real solutions are not fantasies. The solutions you seek are grounded in your current circumstances, skills, and resources. While you look for holistic solution, take the next step with the materials you have available.
Whatever you discover is the next right thing, do. It might be picking up the phone, opening the textbook, apologizing to someone or simply taking a deep breath and choosing hope over despair. Whatever it is, do it. Then do the next one. And the next.
