During the commissioning of the renovated International Conference Centre, Abuja, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, advised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, former governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, to ignore Bystanders and Busybodies.
Like Mr. President’s admonished his cabinet minister to focus on his assignment, the path of everyone who would achieve anything extraordinary is littered with two types of landmines for your downfall and possible destruction, those who watch you bleed without lifting a hand, and those who sharpen knives for your back. The truth remains that your character isn’t forged during the applause of achievement—it is made and reinforced in the furnace of resistance.
There are people who silently witness your struggles. They see the light of your ambition flicker, but stand aside, even when they have the power to rekindle your flame. They are indifferent and never concerned. They hoard their resources, connections, and encouragement while you dig trenches alone. They are not opposed to your success, their only crime is calculated absence to your present hurdles and struggles.
There are others who desire to be architects of your undoing or misfortune. They don’t just doubt you—they invest in your failure. They seize every moment to throw passive-aggressive jabs at you and your work. They are responsible for the whispers that make your vision encounter accidental sabotage. Their mission is to pull you down to their level of mediocrity with every opportunity they get.
Thomas Edison endured 10,000 failed experiments as bystanders mocked, calling him delusional and busybodies peddled tales of the end of his career. He ended up lighting the world with the incandescent bulb.
Marie Curie was called a “harlot” for researching radioactivity as bystanders withheld funding and busybodies smeared her Nobel wins. She revolutionized science with her discovery.
Steve Jobs was fired by bystanders who didn’t believe in his vision, while busybodies declared his company, Apple, dead. He rebuilt the empire that inspire us today.
The bystanders wait for you to fail and busybodies are the first to criticize and amplify controversies against you to bring about your downfall. Both bring about a resistance that feeds the building of your character. Keep your focus. Your efforts matter and they will pay off. Do not wait for the help of bystanders, because it won’t come, and don’t be tempted to think that busybodies will have a change of your heart towards you. Keep going, your success will come despite them.
