I have learnt to smile and laugh through daunting times. A elderly friend who frequently communicates with me, would often burst into laughter once I pick up his call. He says, “I have a way to make him laugh by the way I laugh when answering each call, no matter what I may be going through at the moment.
I have learnt to appreciate life and all there is to it, by being optimistic and resilient. It might not be easy, but it is helpful. I intentionally look for the good, beautiful and reasons to smile or laugh in every situation.
Smiles or laughter can be a powerful gesture that not only brightens our own day, but also impacts those around us. Psychologically, they trigger positive emotional responses, boosting mood and lowers stress. When you ask me “How are you?” My answer is, “Wonderful,” with a smile. Most people who speak to me over the phone would either pause to take it in, or respond with a laugh or smile in their voice.
Despite the challenges that life brings, choosing to focus on the beauty around us—whether in nature, relationships, or daily experiences—can shift our outlook. Let your philosophy be to smile and to make others do too. Simple gestures can culminate in making others smile, laugh and be happy.
Keeping a smile and finding reasons for laughter echoes the importance of sustaining joy in life. It’s a reminder to embrace happiness, not just as a fleeting emotion, but as a practice. Even in the midst of stress, disappointments, or setbacks, we should always remember that life is full of moments worth celebrating.
