MY SON SUCCEEDED
This week we have written on the focus of Live and Learn, Live and Love, Love and Yearn, Live and Lean, Love and Earn.
Today, my focus is the most important thing that happened yesterday in my life:
As a parent, especially a father, you may not be abreast with certain developmental stages of your children because your wife does a great job at parenting.
I didn’t know that children had to be taught to do their business in the potty. I never witnessed the sessions my wife had with our first child, but with my son I became more available and mostly worked from home.
Eden has started playgroup and the most easy word from him is NO. His reply to anything you say is No, except the sentence starts with “Do you want….”
I cannot count how many times we have had the conversation where I would point at the potty for him to urinate when he is pressed. Without hesitation, the reply is always “Nyo” (that’s the sound he gives for No). Even when you finally carry him to sit on the potty to do his business, he will stand up and as if he is celebrating, he will say, “I did it!” In my mind I will say, “Is he celebrating sitting on the potty?”
We have tried countless times without success to get him to use the potty until yesterday afternoon. Long story short, I noticed he wanted to urinate, and asked him and he just looked at me. I quickly reacted and placed him on the potty, making the hissing sounds we saw our mothers used to make us urinate.
Na so my son started to pee inside the potty oo. Fear no first let me talk, so I don’t stop the flow of the urine. I allowed him to finish and as he stood up, I held him and shouted, “He did it!” That was when the elder sister and lady staying with us knew what just happened. We celebrated small bros and he was smiling sef.
MY SON SUCCESSFULLY URINATED IN HIS POTTY.
WHAT IT TAUGHT ME:
1. People hear you even when they respond negatively to you. Never let the initial response make you quit your goal.
2. Your sensitivity can lead you to moments of opportunity.
3. Positive responses are available to you but you may need to keep trying to make them happen.
