“Enough is enough. The future is waiting, and I am on my way to fully occupy it.” There comes a moment in every great story when these words pour out of the heart. The excuses exhaust you. You are still afraid, but it’s now overshadowed by a deeper, more primal force and conviction that roars, “Enough is enough. This is not the life I want.”
This is your moment. That obstacle in your career, that setback in your business, that recurring friction in your relationship, that spiritual dryness in your ministry, no matter what holds you down, it has overstayed its welcome. The resistance you feel, that force pushing back against your every move toward growth, is about to meet its match in you as you stand up, fight and overcome them all.
Know what you are up against. Resistance, obstacles, and setbacks thrive in ambiguity. Saying “My business isn’t growing,” “My relationship is hard,” “My career is stuck” are vague complaints, not identifiable enemies.
What is the demon standing against you in your career? Is it “a lack of a specific skill,” “a hateful colleague,” or “a fear of asking for a promotion”? Know it and name it. Is the obstacle in your relationship “poor communication about finances,” “unresolved resentment from a past argument,” or “taking each other for granted”? Define it properly. In your business, are you held back by “ineffective marketing,” “cash flow problems,” or “a competitor’s new strategy”? Be clear about it.
When you are able to name whatever stands against you, you strip it of its mysterious power. Everyone saw Goliath as the Philistine champion and couldn’t dare call him by name but David identified as an uncircumcised Philistine, who was worthy of death because he reproached his God. Truly identifying your setback transforms an overwhelming feeling into a solvable problem.
You must learn a certain truth about resistance and setbacks. A powerful Stoic philosophy and proverb says, “The obstacle in the path becomes the path.” Your setback can either be a sign for you to stop and re-route, or it is part of the route itself? Your resistance can be a barrier to your success, or the very training ground for your success. Know the difference and you will know how to tackle it.
A difficult client might not be ruining your business; they can be teaching you patience and refining your customer service process. A project failure is not necessarily a proof of your incompetence; it can be a data-gathering mission that just provided invaluable lessons. An argument with your partner is not a sign of a failing relationship; it is an opportunity to deepen your understanding or each other and establish healthier boundaries. A period of silence in your ministry is not an abandonment from God or men; it is a season of preparation and building faith.
When you embrace this mindset, resistance and setbacks loses its power and sting. You stop asking, “Why is this happening to me?” and start asking, “What is this preparing me for?” Enough is enough of seeing yourself as a victim of circumstance. You are now a student to overcome it.
Resistance hides in analysis paralysis. Setbacks love it when we research, we plan, we worry, we wait for the perfect moment that never comes. The route out of all resistance and setbacks begins with one bold step, an action in the right direction.
Making the difficult phone call you have been avoiding may be the bold step to solving your business or career problems. Simply initiating a conversation with your partner and having the mind to listen and be present may be the step to solving your relationship problems. Your ministry problems may need a moment of prayerful reflection and reconnecting to God’s message in your heart, something that you have steered away from because of the many teachings and patterns you have imbibed to please people.
Your solution will involve massive, sustained action, but it begins with a single, decisive move. Enough is enough of planning and waiting. It is time to act.
The goal of resistance is to isolate you and make you believe that your struggles are yours alone to bear. This is a lie. No great victory was ever won alone. The people who support you are your fortress.
Like the avengers, assemble your council of supports. One of the greatest lessons I have learnt against setbacks is, “He who has many enemies, must have many allies.” Find a mentor in your career who has navigated similar challenges. My wife sought counseling or confided in a trusted, wise senior friend several times about our relationship before we married and this elderly man will often call me to speak to me about things. Today, I am a much better man. In ministry, surround yourself with a small, faithful team in your ministry for prayer and accountability.
These people will offer a different perspective when you are lost, encouragement when you are down, and truth when you are deceiving yourself. They are your reinforcements. Say enough is enough to fighting a lonely battle.
Ultimately, the greatest battle is not against external obstacles, but in the internal territory of your own mind. Setbacks make up lies about your identity. It wants you to believe that “You’re a failure,” “You’re unlovable,” “You are not up for this.”
Learn to tell yourself who you really are. Write it down and say to yourself, “I am a resilient problem-solver.” Say it out that “I am committed to building a loving relationship.”
Don’t let a temporary circumstance define your identity. You are not your failure. You are the person who gets back up. You are not the obstacle; you are the force that moves it. Enough is enough of letting your challenges write your story. You can end better than you imagine.
Your journey to success in life, love, work, and purpose was never promised to be easy. But it was promised to be worth it. The resistance you feel is the measure of the importance of your goal. So, when you hear a voice of doubt, when the obstacle seems insurmountable, when you feel the temptation to quit, let a new voice in you answer, “Enough is enough, my future is better and I am going to get there.”
