What You See

August 1, 2025

Look around you right now. What do you see? Most people see the routine. But what if you could see differently? What if, within that very same landscape, you could perceive not just problems, but possibilities? Not just inconveniences, but invitations to create value. This shift in perception – seeing what others merely glance at – is the superpower of the successful.

In this episode, we lead you into cultivating the edge in identifying opportunities to provide solutions and add value. The title is What You See.

Opportunities for impactful business and value addition are not reserved for those with exclusive access or secret knowledge. These opportunities are woven into the fabric of our society, hiding in plain sight. They call out in the sighs of frustration, in the gaps between services, and within emerging cultural shifts. The key lies in training your eyes and your mind to perceive them. The advantage is in the ability to spot opportunities where others only see the routine on the surface.

To cultivate this ability, you would need to train your mind and eyes. Opportunities are not based on mere assumptions, but on actual gaps and needs learned through keen observation and appropriate questions.

Where is energy being wasted? Where are people struggling, waiting too long, paying too much, or settling for a shabby treatment? Imagine long queues at a local bank. That’s a problem. Seeing this birthed mobile banking apps and fintech solutions. I remember reading how Virgin Airlines by Richard Branson started because of a shabby treatment. In all situations always ask, “What annoys me or others repeatedly? What small inefficiencies add up to big headaches?”

Listen to the conversations, the complaints, the whispered wishes. What do people desire that is not readily available, accessible, or affordable? Inquire about “What are people wishing for. What problems are they just ‘putting up with’ because they think no solution exists?”

Society experiences dynamism and constantly evolves. New technologies, emerging demographics, changing values, and environmental concerns create ripples that become waves of opportunity. Pay attention to “What people are talking about more. What new behaviors are emerging. What big societal changes are underway, and what needs will they create?”

What areas are skills, tools, information, or capital missing? Can you bridge that gap? Make inquiry about “Who has something valuable but lacks the means to share or monetize it effectively? What essential resource is scarce or inaccessible here?”

What is abundant, underutilized, or even considered “waste” in your community? Can you transform it into something valuable? Observe “What is in abundance but not being used to its full potential. What ‘problem’ could actually be a raw material?”

Use your keen sense of observation and right questions to discover and ascertain gaps and needs to provide solutions and add value. Success in any society begins from the moment you are able to achieve this.
