Welcome to Episode 174.
I have been brooding very much on purpose in recent times. This is because achieving personal purpose is what gives meaning to life, no matter how large or small your contribution is. Our focus for this discourse is titled, POTENTIAL, PRESSURE AND PURPOSE.
Everyone has potential; that raw ore, the whispers of talents unseen, strengths untested, dreams unspoken and territories uncharted. The easiest way to define potential is to see it as a promise. It is first pure and powerful. It is like the blank canvas of an artist, or the quiet resilience waiting beneath the surface.
But the promise of potential alone rarely builds the empires you envision or forge the character you need. This is the role of pressure. God, through life’s wisdom, rarely allows potential to remain comfortable. Pressure arrives like crushing tidal waves of unexpected losses, failures, periods of agonizing uncertainty, relentless demands, and soul-wearying doubt. Pressure often gives you the feeling that you are under enemy attack. It can isolate you, exhaust you, and make you question everything – especially the potential you once felt so sure of.

The diamond comes as carbon with a potential for brilliance, but only when it goes under immense, sustained pressure and heat does it transform to what we appreciate and value as the hard, shiny ornament. Without that force of pressure, the carbon remains as graphite that is useful in some way, but never the dazzling perfection that it is supposed to be.
The key lesson for this discussion is that pressure is not a destroyer. Often, what you go through as trying times are pressure that accomplishes the following:
Pressure enables you to discover your true strength. When comfort is stripped away from you, you find reserves you never knew existed. Pressure reveals the bedrock of your character.
It helps you to clarify what really matters in your life or situation. As carbon goes in the fire and the non-essential burns away, so it is with us. We shed varying illusions, superficial goals, and toxic attachments, leaving only our enduring core values and deepest desires.
You will develop resilience as you build your muscles of endurance with each challenge you overcome and each storm you weather. This teaches that you can bend without breaking and adapt without losing yourself.
Your skills are sharpened because pressure demands innovation, problem-solving and refined focus. You are forced to hone your abilities, often in ways comfort would never allow.
An elderly man said to a young fellow in distress, “I have been where you are and I can help you in this situation.” This is so because under pressure you cultivate empathy and wisdom. If you have navigated the pitch black path of trying to find your way to light in any life situation, you gain profound understanding and compassion for others on their own challenging paths.
Faith is built when you encounter trying times. In such situations, you look for who or what to lean on, you reach out to trusted allies and you hope for God’s intervention.
The journey of potential through pressure eventually leads you towards purpose, where your values, wisdom and refined strengths in character and abilities align to make a contribution that can come from only you.
