A few years ago the slogan for GoTV, the television cable subscription company was, Live it. Love it. I remember how I used to chorus it with my toddler nephew and niece, when the advert ran on air. The idea behind my thoughts today, is that the work that makes our lives the most meaningful, is a synergy between our deepest passions and purpose.
Loving what you do is greatly connected to purposeful living. People who are deeply passionate about their fields—whether it’s technology, education, or social justice—often change the world.
Passion helps serve as a catalyst for excellence. When you love what you do, work no longer feels like a burden. Instead, it becomes a source of joy and fulfillment. Passion drives you to invest more time and effort, often resulting in the mastery of your craft. Usian Bolt’s famous quote; “I trained four years to run 9 seconds and people give up when they don’t see results in two months,” comes to mind to show just how passion helps to attain excellence.
Your purpose goes beyond just enjoying your work. It involves understanding why you do what you do, and how it contributes to the greater good of humanity. Mother Theresa’s project among the poor in Calcutta, India, still stands out showing us how purpose can be meaningful and impactful, when it is properly understood.
There is a balance between passion and purpose. While loving your work is crucial, there is also a place for discipline and structure. Loving what you do doesn’t mean you’ll always feel motivated or excited, but passion can help you stay disciplined. Because you care about what you do, you are ready to pay the price necessary for its success.
Passion doesn’t mean the absence of obstacles; in fact, passion often lead people to face even greater challenges. Passion can make you plunge with optimism to encounter financial constraints or give you a focus that limits your career choices. But when you love your work, you are more willing to confront difficulties, learn from failures, and continue improving.
Your search for meaning in living comes to an end, when you understand the synergy of your passion and purpose. Find what you do that impacts others and work it out with love. Live it out with unending love.
