It is easy for us to set up defenses and make war against external threats and enemies. Focusing on the noisy, threat-filled external jungle, makes us loose sight of the real enemy within. The enemy lurking inside us with the ability to end us, without a moment’s notice.
From the biblical story of Samson, we see that the enemies of Israel were easy for him to deal with, but he couldn’t recognize his self talk as his real enemy.
Samson got everything he wanted by his sheer strength. He relocated a city gate up a mountain. Killed 1000 men. Caught hundreds of foxes in one night. Feats told only in fairy tales.
All Samson needed to get anything done was to tell himself to do it. He never took advice from anyone, and the only time he reflected on his behavior, his solution was to die with the enemy. His self talk was really not good.
Many people are like Samson; only seeing external enemies and coming to external conflicts with minds filled with negativity and lacking control. If we monitor what goes on in our minds, and tailor our thoughts to regularly reflect on our behaviors, challenge negative beliefs, stay aware of our values and align our actions to practice gratitude, set goals, seek support, develop resilience and embrace our authenticity, we will do more than Samson did, and live longer than Samson too.
The real enemy is in you. Win your internal wars first and you stand a better chance to handle the external enemies.
